Brown Sugar Babe Review: Why I Went from 0 to 9 Luxury Body Oils in 3 Months

Let me tell you something I'm not even slightly embarrassed about: I own nine Brown Sugar Babe body oils, I've been coveting ten more, and I genuinely cannot remember life before them. This is that story.

Welcome to The Black Beauty Edit; an ongoing series dedicated to spotlighting Black-owned brands across beauty, skincare, fragrance, wellness, and fashion. Some of these brands I've been using for years, some are new to my radar and some I genuinely cannot wait to get my hands on. I couldn't think of a better brand to open this series with than one that has completely taken over my fragrance routine and shows no signs of giving it back.

How Brown Sugar Babe Actually Got Me

Here's the honest version: I was not an early adopter. I had been following Brown Sugar Babe on Instagram and TikTok for over a year before I ever placed an order. I'd seen the posts. I'd seen my friends' stories. I'd watched the community talk about these scents like they were something spiritual, and every time I got close to buying, I talked myself out of it. Do I really need another body product? Is it actually worth the price? What if I hate it? You know how it goes.

October 2025 is when I finally stopped overthinking and placed my first order. I got a text from my friend saying they were having a 20% off sale to celebrate the owner Maekaeda Gibbons's birthday. I kept it practical with just two body oils. I wasn't trying to go all in on a brand I'd never tried before. Fragrance blind buys can be tricky and I wanted to test the waters and confirm if the hype was real. Those first two bottles are still going strong months later, and it speaks to the genius of body oils for fragrance layering: you don't need full-body coverage to get the impact. A few pumps placed strategically, and you're set. I have yet to even put a dent in either bottle, which is part of why I could justify going from two bottles to nine in three months.

By the time I was a few weeks into that first bottle, I was already planning my next order. The compliments had started, and not the polite "oh that smells nice" kind, but the stop-you-mid-conversation, lean-in-closer, "what are you wearing" kind. The longevity had exceeded everything I expected. I'd apply in the morning and still catch myself smelling it six to eight hours later heading home from work. The experience of layering these oils with my existing perfumes had given me an entirely new relationship with fragrance. I wasn't just smelling good anymore, I was smelling intentional. Three months later: nine bottles in my collection, a wish list that keeps growing, and a fragrance routine I would genuinely describe as elevated. Brown Sugar Babe didn't just deliver on the hype. It created a new standard.

Why Body Oils Changed Everything for Me

Before Brown Sugar Babe, I was a scented lotion person here and there when I wanted to layer fragrance. Shower, pat dry, lotion, move on. I had no real complaints because I didn't know what I was missing. Then I made the switch to body oils, and I genuinely felt like I'd been doing something wrong my whole life. Here's what actually changes when you switch: body oil is an occlusive, meaning it creates a physical barrier on your skin's surface that prevents moisture from escaping which is something lotion simply can't replicate at the same level. Lotion is mostly water-based, which means it evaporates within a few hours and takes the scent with it. Body oil stays. It absorbs into your skin and locks everything in, which is why both the moisture and the fragrance last so much longer. I've caught myself walking past a warm vent at work and smelling my own skin and genuinely being impressed.

The other thing that surprised me was the speed of absorption. I had this assumption that body oils would leave me standing in my bathroom for ten minutes waiting to get dressed, but Brown Sugar Babe absorbs fast and doesn't get everywhere once you start moving about. One pump goes a long way due to scent concentration, so I use one to three pumps total for strategic placement: arms, neck, décolletage, and if it is the only scent I am wearing that day, my torso, depending on the scent. That longevity is exactly why I could justify building a collection. But here's what really separates Brown Sugar Babe from other body oils I've tried: the scents. These are not generic. They are not afterthoughts. These are fully developed, intentional fragrances, many of them inspired by high-end perfumes that wear beautifully on skin, evolve throughout the day, and prompt strangers to stop you and ask what you're wearing. That is not something I say lightly, because I am particular about fragrance.

The Art of Scent Layering (And Why These Oils Are Built for It)

One of the things I genuinely didn't expect to love as much as I do is how well Brown Sugar Babe body oils work as a layering base. This is where real creativity happens, and once you try it, you'll find it hard to go back to wearing perfume without a body oil underneath. There are three ways I use these oils depending on the day and what I'm going for. When I want to create something completely unique — a scent that's just mine — I'll apply a Brown Sugar Babe oil and layer a contrasting perfume on top. The oil adds warmth and depth to whatever goes over it. Something like Pink Poundcake under Commodity's Milk creates a sweet and unique profile that isn't overly sweet but will definitely turn heads.

When I want to intensify a scent I already love, I'll match the oil to the perfume. Puff Society body oil under Kayali Yum Boujee Marshmallow 81 is genuinely one of the best fragrance decisions I've made. The oil amplifies the perfume and extends the longevity. It sounds excessive and it completely is and I have no regrets. And then there are days when I just want to smell good without the full ritual. On those days, the body oil solo is more than enough. That's the flexibility that makes these worth every penny because they adapt to whatever level of fragrance commitment you have on any given morning.

Pro tip: Apply to 80% dry skin. Not soaking wet, not fully dry. That slightly damp window is the sweet spot because the oil forms a silky layer that seals in the moisture your skin just absorbed, locking in both hydration and scent at the same time.

My Top 3 Brown Sugar Babe Body Oils (After Testing All 9)

If you're new to the brand and trying to figure out where to start, here's where I'd point you. These are my three most-reached-for oils out of everything I own:

Milky Way: The Most Complimented One I Own

I need you to understand something: I have been stopped mid-conversation by people who just needed to know what I was wearing. Co-workers come into the office and say "I knew you were here, I smelled you on the elevator"  in the best way possible. Milky Way does that. Every single time. This one is inspired by Commodity Milk- a fragrance that retails for $155 and happens to be in my top 5 fragrances. It delivers that same clean, creamy, elevated vibe without the triple-digit price tag. It's not sweet in the way gourmands typically are. It's soft. It's luxurious. It smells like expensive skincare and warm cashmere and something you'd find at the fragrance counter of a department store you can't quite afford, but you get it anyway. I wear this one to work, for bestie dates, Saturday errands,  or for days when I just want to feel put together without doing much. I literally have to fight NOT to wear it. It is universally appealing without being too common, which is hard to pull off. This is the one I recommend to perfume lovers who asks where to start with Brown Sugar Babe. It's the safe bet that never feels safe because the compliments never stop. Shop Milky Way here

Caked Up- The Perfect Starting Point

If you've been thinking about trying Brown Sugar Babe, or scented body oils in general,  but aren't sure where to begin, Caked Up is your entry point. The scent is warm, gourmand, and undeniably cozy. Think fresh-baked vanilla cake with just enough sweetness to feel indulgent without being overwhelming. It's the kind of scent that wraps around you rather than announcing itself, which makes it incredibly wearable and provides endless layering opportunities. On its own, it is soft and effortless, like you just came out of a warm kitchen and decided to bottle that feeling. Under a vanilla-forward perfume it transforms into something richer, deeper, and more complex. The oil gives the fragrance on top a warmth it couldn't achieve on its own. It's approachable enough for someone who's never worn a gourmand before and satisfying enough for someone who's been chasing this exact vibe for years. It is my most-used layering base for a reason. Pink Poundcake: Comfort in a Bottle

Gourmand scents are my love language which made  Pink Poundcake my first BSB purchase. If you have ever walked past a bakery and thought I want to smell like that, this is your body oil. It opens like warm strawberry cake fresh out of the oven. It is not artificial strawberry or candy strawberry, but real, warm, slightly jammy strawberry with butter and vanilla underneath it. It's cozy and nostalgic and genuinely happy-smelling, if that makes sense. I reach for this on slow Sundays, on self-care days, on days when I want to feel wrapped in something soft and sweet without a lot of effort. It layers beautifully with vanilla or marshmallow-based perfumes in a way that creates something completely irresistible. Shop Pink Poundcake here

The Full Collection: All 9 Body Oils I Own (Plus One I Gave Away)

For the people who want the full picture, here's everything in my collection right now:

Pink Poundcake: the self-care Sunday scent that makes you want to stay home and be cozy.

Milky Way (inspired by Commodity Milk): the one strangers ask about. It’s clean, creamy, effortlessly expensive.

Puff Society (inspired by Kayali Yum Boujee Marshmallow): what is understood, doesn’t need to be said, but if I need to say it, here it goes: Kayali’s YBM is one of the most duped fragrances I have ever seen, however this one smells richer and it is stronger.

Pistachio Ice Dream (inspired by Kayali Yum Pistachio Gelato 33): the one I bought because I already loved the perfume and somehow, it's better as an oil.

Caked Up (a BSB Original): my most-used layering base that goes under everything.

Sweetest Taboo ( Inspired by Ulyka Parfums Nota Sugar) : warm, a little mysterious, blended so well you can’t quite place it.

Bonita Apple Bum: exactly what fall should smell like. AN apple orchard in a bottle.

Angel of Mine (inspired by Kilian Angel's Share): elegant and grown, the one I wear when I want to feel refined.

Kris P Kreme: a powdered doughnut that works on skin and I don't know how, but it does.

Cloud 9 technically made it ten, but it skewed too floral on my skin. I passed it to my sister, and it wears beautifully on her, so at least it found a good home. Sometimes a scent just isn't meant for you, and that's okay. Every single one serves a purpose. Some get more love than others, but there's not one I regret adding to the lineup. Meet Maekaeda: The Founder Behind Brown Sugar Babe

Maekaeda Gibbons, owner of Brown Sugar Babe- photo courtesy of google.com/broownsugarbabe

One of the things I genuinely appreciate about Brown Sugar Babe is that there's a real person behind it and she's actively building something special. Maekaeda Gibbons is the founder and creative force behind Brown Sugar Babe, and if you spend any time following the brand on social media, you'll see her presence throughout. She's not a faceless corporation. She's a Black woman entrepreneur who saw a gap in the fragrance market and filled it with products that deliver. What stands out to me is the intentionality behind every scent. These aren't random fragrance oils thrown together and marketed with pretty packaging. Maekaeda clearly understands fragrance, from the notes, the layering potential, the inspiration behind each scent. You can tell these products are created by someone who genuinely loves fragrance and wants to offer luxury at an accessible price point.

The community she's built around Brown Sugar Babe is also something to pay attention to. The reviews are real. The engagement is real. The loyalty is real. I am a member of their Facebook group, their channel on Instagram, and I have the official app downloaded. That doesn't happen by accident, it happens when you consistently deliver quality and show up for your customers. Supporting Brown Sugar Babe means supporting Maekaeda's vision, her business, and her ability to continue creating products that rival brands with ten times the budget. That matters. Representation in the beauty industry isn't just about who's in the ads, it's about who owns the companies and who's making the creative decisions.

Is Brown Sugar Babe Worth It?

Here's the thing about Brown Sugar Babe that I think gets lost in the "is it worth the hype" conversation: the hype isn't manufactured. There's no celebrity behind it. There's no massive ad spend driving the buzz. The community grew the way good things grow, organically, through word of mouth, because the products actually do what they promise. I went from zero to nine bottles in three months not because I'm impulsive but because every single purchase confirmed the decision. There was no weak link. No bottle I reached for once and forgot about. These are daily-use products that earn their place in your routine and then quietly become non-negotiable.

Supporting Black-owned businesses should never feel like a compromise and with Brown Sugar Babe, it genuinely doesn't. You're not buying something out of obligation. You're buying something that rivals and, in many cases, outperforms products at two and three times the price. The fact that you're also supporting a Black-owned brand is the added bonus on top of an already excellent purchase.

Between writing this review and publishing it, Brown Sugar Babe had a surprise 50% off sale. The entire site sold out in 50 minutes. I managed to check out with ten more body oils including two 2oz backups of Milky Way (because the math made more sense than buying one 4oz, and yes, it's that good), Creme de la Creme, Marry Me, Vanilla Sky, Moolah, Sweet Thang, Matchamony, Bask, and On the Prowl, before the site literally crashed from traffic. A lot of people didn't get their carts. I got lucky. The fact that I bought eight more oils after already owning nine, including backups of my most complimented scent, should tell you everything you need to know about this brand.

If you've been on the fence, get off it. Start with one bottle, either Caked Up or Crème De la Creme if you want a safe bet, Milky Way if you want to be surprised, Pink Poundcake if you love gourmands. Wear it for a week. Layer it with your favorite perfume. Tell me in the comments how many bottles you ended up ordering, because it's never just one.

What's your fragrance personality? Are you a gourmand lover, a clean scent person, or somewhere in the middle? Drop it in the comments. I want to help you figure out exactly which Brown Sugar Babe scent is yours. Shop my entire collection here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Brown Sugar Babe body oils worth the price? Yes, with zero hesitation. The scent longevity alone puts them ahead of most body products at higher price points and a little goes a long way. One pump goes a long way, so I use them strategically: arms, neck, décolletage, not full-body application. I have yet to put a dent in any of my bottles and it's been over three months, and I wear an oil every day. That's genuinely good value, and it's how you build a collection without breaking the bank.

What does "inspired by" mean for these scents? Brown Sugar Babe creates scents inspired by popular luxury fragrances, meaning they share a similar scent profile but are their own formulation. Pistachio Ice Dream is inspired by Kayali Yum Pistachio Gelato 33, Milky Way is inspired by Commodity Milk. They're not dupes in the knockoff sense, they're interpretations that stand on their own and often perform better as body oils than the originals do as alcohol-based perfumes.

How do you layer body oils with perfume? Apply to skin that's about 80% dry after your shower, or first thing in the morning if you shower at night. Let it absorb for about 60 seconds, then apply perfume to your pulse points. The oil creates a base that extends the perfume's longevity and adds warmth. You can match scents to intensify or contrast them to create something completely unique.

How long do Brown Sugar Babe body oils last on skin? Between six and twelve hours depending on the scent, the weather, and your skin chemistry. Milky Way and Pistachio Ice Dream consistently last the longest in my experience. For reference, most body lotions fade within a few hours. I track scent longevity on my skin from the moment I put it on in the morning until it is time for me to shower again after work.

What's the difference between body oils and perfume oils? Body oils are formulated to moisturize skin while providing fragrance. Perfume oils are typically concentrated fragrance without the moisturizing component, meant to replace traditional alcohol-based perfumes. The perfume oils have a stronger scent throw and longer longevity, however, Brown Sugar Babe has made even the perfume oils moisturizing. Both the nourishing body oils and perfume oils are built on a base of five organic carrier oils that work together to heal, condition, and nourish skin: avocado oil (antioxidant, deeply hydrating), grapeseed oil (anti-inflammatory, plumps skin), sweet almond oil (soothes, moisturizes), olive oil (vitamin E, relieves dryness), and castor oil (keeps skin hydrated). The perfume oil simply carries a higher fragrance concentration on top of that same nourishing base.

How much product should I use per application?  This comes down to personal preference. For fragrance layering I use one to two pumps total: one on my arms and wrists, one on my neck and décolletage, and sometimes my torso depending on the scent. That's enough for the scent to project and last all day. I don't need full-body coverage to get the impact. Strategic placement is key, especially if you're building a collection on a budget, but fragrance layering is expressive, and you do whatever feels best to you in that moment.
